Indonesia poses 500 volcanoes, 129 of them are categorized into active volcanoes. These volcanoes extend from Sumatera Island, hrough Java, Bali and Sunda Lesser, Banda, Halmahera over North Sulawesi forming a Ring of Fire of Indonesia. A number of the active volcanoes of Indon.esia are equal to 13% of volcanoes in the world. Comparing to counntries, such as USA, Japan, France, Italia, and other countries that have volcanoes less than Indonesia, they have built the volcano museum

In the basis of a dramatic scene of Indonesian volcanoes, the Indonesian Parliament on 11 June 2002 proposed Central Government of Indonesia to build the volcano museum at Bali and Yogyakarta. Responding to this sugggestion, the Directorate of Volcanology and Geologic Hazard Mitigation under institution of General Directorate of Geology and Mineral Resources of Department of Energy and Mineral Resources held an formal meeting on 9 July and 14 July 2002 with the Regional Development Planning Agency and Local Parliament of Bangli Regency to discuss regarding to the Batur Volcano Museum action plans.

An intensive meeting as establishment of a platform for constructing the Batur Volcano Museum was held between the Directorate of Volcanology and Geologic Hazard Mitigation, . General Directorate of Geology and Mineral Resources of Department of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Regional Development Planning Agency of Bangli on 19 November 2002. One of final decision of this meeting is an agreement to start conducting a feasibility study of the Batur Volcano Museum plant. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) among General Directorate of Geology and Mineral Resources of Department Energy and Mineral Resources - Bali province - Bangli Regency was held in Jakarta, 10 February 2004. Another MoU was held between Bangli Regency and Directora Natural Protection and Conservation of Forestry Miriistry. On 26 March 2004, lying of a cornerstone was a milestone of joume through time to bring into reality the Batur Volcano Museum.
